Hello there,

I'm a film major at UNLV. I write, direct, and draw storyboards. I don't know if you could use some help.
IZTheDoomMovie Featured By Owner May 23, 2016  Hobbyist Filmographer
I could, but I can't just accept anyone. :) I first need to let you know that:

1.) IZ:TDM! will only be accepting volunteer work. :/ I want to pay people, but that's legally dicey, this being a fan film and all.

2.) This is an unprofessional film - it's my first stab at directing and filmmaking, so the standards of work will not be up to par with industry standards. I try to maintain a professional atmosphere, of course, but the fact is that I am inexperienced, which might prove somewhat frictional for someone who actually has education in their line of work! :XD:

3.) You have to be able to draw in the Invader ZIM style well. Naturally, if you can't draw Invader ZIM characters, then there's not much point in helping on a Fan Film, lol

4.) I'll need commitment when it's time to storyboard. Too many people flake out after one or two assignments and then realize they just wanted to help on an impulsive whim. I'll need assurance that that won't happen and that I can rely on you to stick with the project until your work is done.

And - lastly - you don't absolutely NEED to be a fan of Invader ZIM, but it might help if you had a passing familiarity with the source material at least. ;)

Knowing all this, are you still interested? If so, we can discuss this further!

I understand, it's a matter of an audition process, I'm pretty used to that. I'm also prepared to not get the ''job'', and I'll be OK with that.

1) I would be more than happy to volunteer, I've volunteered on plenty of Indie films for no pay in the past, considering I've only been involved in student films. I try to get as involved in my own projects as well as other people's projects as much as I can. All my films, thus far, have been made on no budget. As a director and full time student, I also understand how difficult it is to not only raise money but to hire people for real pay. I'm not in for the money, I could care less. Student filmmakers such as myself can be ''bought'' cheap, because we are more than eager to work on films for no pay. We just want the experience. Even if it is a fan film.

2) I don't mind that the film is unprofessional. Honestly, I've never worked on an industry film, I'm a completely independent student filmmaker. I'm hoping to attend grad school after I graduate this upcoming December (which will teach me to make films on a real budget), but so far, I've had no real experience working in the industry, so it's not an issue for me. I've taken workshop classes that mimic what it would be like to work on a professional film set, and I know how to behave professionally on a film set, real or otherwise,-- my university provides equipment and studios-- but so far I've only worked on student films with fellow students, provided that my instructors are industry professionals, but I've never worked on their films--you have to be part of the grad program to do that, and I'm undergrad. So I'm by no means more experienced or superior than you are, haha. I'm very inexperienced.

3) I've been practicing, I don't know if it's up to par………

Granted, these are just WIP's, my final pieces tend to not be so shitty, they usually look like this once it's all cleaned up and coloured:…

I do know how to do digital art, btw, but traditional is my preferred method. Granted, I have photoshop, but my storyboards and concept art are all traditional (I know the standard now is drawing tablets but I prefer old fashioned pencil and paper).
This is a character sheet I did for someone's comic a long time ago:
It's not great, but it got the job done.

If it's not up to your standards, I'm completely fine with that, and I will bother you no more.

4) As far as commitment goes, it is summer vacation for me. I've been looking to get involved in a film project, even during the school year I'm always always looking to get involved in other people's films in addition to my own. I'm used to staying up late till 3 AM, once I drew an entire storyboard for a film we were to shoot the very next day in one night. I'm prepared to give up a social life and breaks, I'm used to working around the clock. I just finished a 21 minute short film I've worked on all semester, I edited the entire thing in two days. Commitment is no issue for me. I've had people flake on my films at the last minute, and I understand how extremely frustrating it is. It really is hard finding good help these days, especially on non-professional no budget projects. I try to help people as much as I can because I know the emotions that come with a film crew abandoning you. I did a short film for school where hardly anyone showed up, and so my gaffer was also my sound guy, and my DP was also my camera operator. And my assistant director had to be my actor at the last minute. We had to double up because so many people bailed on us. It's really irritating when that happens, but in the world of film, you have to learn to improvise and make decisions on the spot. Plus, it helps when your film crew--whether it's liveaction or animation--has the ability to wear different hats.

5) I've watched Invader Zim as a child, I've recently gotten back into it, I just finished all 9 issues of the comic book series in one sitting. I'm pretty obsessed right now, lol.

6) I am still interested. But again, I won't be torn up if I'm not what you're looking for, or if I don't have what it takes. I've been rejected before, it's the biggest part of the industry, and I'm totally fine with that. As a director myself, I know the decision making process, and having to hire people that suits the project best, and not hiring them because people want to volunteer and you need all the help you can get. You have to choose people that have the skills needed to complete said project.

That being said, have a nice day and thank you for responding. :)

Wow! I did not expect such a great response!!! :wow: You're definitely qualified for work in all areas! There's only one question I still have that isn't quite resolved: your ability to create satisfactory black-and-white drawings that fit the IZ style well enough to be used as a reference for animators.

Your work ethic, understanding of what's going on, the fact that you're an IZ fan and are actually really into it at the moment... these all are great!!! I just need a way to assess your skill as a storyboard artist working within the constraints of IZ itself.Tell you what:

Tell you what: if I give you a few random characters (including some made up) and ask you to draw them doing different actions, just to get a feel of if you're able to hit the right tone, would you be willing to give a few test sketches a shot? :)

(also - I have *NO* bias for how you do artwork when it comes to storyboarding. For concept art, naturally, I want it digitized so that it's referable for animators, but storyboards are different, and I'll equally accept digital or physically made storyboards ;) )

Hey I was wondering if it's too late to help? Here is something I did in a few hours. It's fine if it's not good or u already have enough people. I understand. ^_^…
IZTheDoomMovie Featured By Owner Apr 21, 2015  Hobbyist Filmographer
Hey there! :) Sorry for taking a few days to get back (sometimes DA fails to let me know when someone posts a comment on this group).

Well, I took a look at your art, and it's pretty good. :) Unfortunately, it's not *quite* the IZ-style we're looking for. Sorry. But thanks for offering your skills anyway! :) It means a lot to me that people are interested in helping out.
AngelGirl10296 Featured By Owner Apr 21, 2015  Hobbyist Filmographer
Thank you!! ^_^ it's fine, can't wait for when you guys are done. =)
IZTheDoomMovie Featured By Owner Apr 21, 2015  Hobbyist Filmographer
I can't wait, either! :) And you can always help out by simply spreading word about the project. ;)
